Buffalo Park Flagstaff

Flagstaff offers a variety of parks that locals and visitors alike can enjoy. From dog parks, to arboretums, national and state parks, to family-friendly city parks, people in Flagstaff really do love being outdoors. And who wouldn’t with this beautiful weather? Buffalo Park is one of the many parks, but this one is near and dear to all locals. Located on a mesa with incredible views, it is one of the most beautiful parks in all of Arizona.

Buffalo Park consists of a main 2.2-mile loop trail that is flat, well-maintained and great for all levels of ability. You can take anything from a wheelchair, stroller, or bike, to walking multiple dogs on it. This park stretches north into the Ponderosa forests before rolling up into the Dry Lake Hills. Not only do you get to take in a perfect view of Mount Elden in all its glory, there’s also a unique view of Mt. Humphreys, Arizona's tallest peak. Buffalo Park is very much appreciated for the views, as much as it is for the wildlife, peace, and even nighttime stargazing and photography. This park has become very popular, well-loved, and utilized, but its guests have created a special feeling that keeps visitors and locals returning on regular basis.

You can explore Buffalo Park any time of the year and if you want to be alone - go at sunrise or try cross-country skiing in the winter. During warm weeks you will see young families, students, the avid runner, and the daily walker taking a break from work or studying. It is a fantastic place to collect your thoughts or even work up a sweat! This 2.2-mile loop has multiple exercise challenges along the course. If you want to really challenge yourself, run, jog, or walk the loop while completing each exercise station.

If you’re looking to escape town or if you are on a mountain bike, you can stay on the trail and head north into the ponderosas toward the Dry Lake Hills, which will connect you to Oldham Trail. You can do a loop on the Oldham before returning to Buffalo Park or catch the Pipeline Line trail to Elden. There are also miles of single tracks that head west and northwest to the main mountain.

Buffalo Park does have bathrooms and water fountains available for the public that are newly built and well-kept. It is a wonderful place to get an afternoon jog in or have a picnic. Once a year in September local astronomers unpack their telescopes for an incredible night viewing along the main trail. It’s a spectacular event if you can catch it on a clear night. Stop by Buffalo Park anytime you are in Flagstaff to fall in love with one of our local treasures.
